Legacy of a Library Page

Snapshots from the story of a young man who once scrambled deftly across five tiers of cast-iron stacks pulling books for patron requests, and later disappeared in the jungles without a trace while serving his country.

The role of a page at the Old Cincinnati Library on Vine Street was perilous and “not for the faint of heart”. Norty worked as a page for 7 years, fitting work for an energetic teen who also joined the high school swimming and volleyball teams.

Brian Powers, head of Research at the modern-day Cincinnati and Hamilton County library, and Chris Smith, in genealogy, concur that the famous photo of a library page certainly aligns with Norton’s employment timeline:

When Norton applied for enlistment, his employer provided a reference reflecting a strong work ethic and personal character.

The library was undoubtedly proud of the young men who served their country:

The news was not as good just a few years later.
